Brewing Tea:
Unlock Your Perfect Cup
Moments that inspire Why Your Brewing Ritual Matters At TZB, every teacup is a Moment that inspires. Brewing tea is more than a task; it's a ritual that honors quality, balance, and presence. With a few simple techniques, each steep becomes a rich sensory experience. This guide outlines how to brew tea perfectly, covering everything from water temperature and steeping time to tools, tea types, and personalization.
Water Quality & Temperature Precision
Great tea begins with great water. Always use cold, freshly drawn filtered water. Avoid distilled or reboiled water, which lacks the oxygen needed for full flavor extraction.
Ideal Temperature Ranges:
- Black Tea: 90–100°C (194–212°F)
- Green Tea: 70–80°C (158–176°F)
- White Tea: 75–85°C (167–185°F)
- Oolong Tea: 80–90°C (176–194°F)
- Pu’er Tea: 95–100°C (203–212°F)
- Herbal/Tisanes: 95–100°C (203–212°F)
- Matcha: 75–85°C (167–185°F)
Tip: Let the boiled water cool for 1–2 minutes before pouring over green or white tea.
Measure with Care: The Golden Ratio
Use 1 teaspoon (2g) of loose-leaf tea per 8-oz (240ml) cup. For matcha, ½ to 1 teaspoon (1–2g) is ideal. For teabags, use one per cup.
For a stronger cup, increase the tea quantity, not the steeping time.
Steeping Time: Flavor at Its Peak
Steeping too long can cause bitterness; too short, and you miss the full flavor. Use a timer for precision.
Tea Type | Steep Time |
Black tea | 3-5 minutes |
Green tea | 1-3 minutes |
White tea | 2-4 minutes |
Oolong tea | 4-7 minutes |
Pu’er tea | 4-6 minutes |
Herbal tea | 5-7 minutes |
Matcha | Whisk immediately |
Tea bags | 2-4 minutes |
Teaware: The Tools that Transform
The right tools elevate the experience:
- Teapots: Great for multiple servings.
- Infusers/Strainers: Ideal for single cups.
- Gaiwan/Yixing Pot: Perfect for oolong and pu’er.
- Matcha Bowl & Chasen: Essential for frothy matcha.
- Glass Pitcher/Cold Brew Jar: For refreshing iced teas.
Avoid metal teapots for delicate teas; they can affect flavor.
Matcha: The Whisked Elixir
Matcha is whisked, not steeped.
How to Prepare:
- Sift ½–1 tsp into a matcha bowl.
- Add 60ml (2 oz) hot water (75–85°C).
- Whisk briskly in a “W” motion using a chasen.
- Enjoy immediately. Add milk or more water for a latte.
Teabag vs. Loose Leaf
Loose-leaf tea offers fuller flavor and can be re-steeped. Teabags are convenient and quick. Both work well with proper care and fresh ingredients.
Iced Tea: A Refreshing Option
Hot Brew Method:
- Double the tea quantity.
- Steep normally.
- Pour over ice.
Cold Brew Method:
- Add tea to cold water.
- Refrigerate for 6–12 hours.
- Strain and enjoy.
Use green, black, oolong, or herbal teas for a refreshing cold brew.
Customize Your Cup
- Milk or No Milk? Strong black teas go well with milk. Others are best enjoyed plain.
- Sweeteners: Add honey, lemon, or nothing at all.
- Flavor Add-ins: Try mint, cinnamon, or ginger.
Tips for the Perfect Cup
- Experiment: Find your preferred taste by adjusting the steep time or tea quantity.
- Re-steep: Oolong and pu’er can be infused multiple times.
- Store Properly: Use airtight containers. Keep tea away from heat, light, and strong odors.
